Mount Kenya Technical Ascent

Climb Africa's 2nd highest mountain

Mount Kenya is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa. Most visitors who climb the mountain use the standing hiking route to the sub-summit, Point Lenana (4,985m).

This itinerary uses the technical South-east face MacKinders ascent route to the summit proper, Batian (5,199m), and requires prior technical climbing skills up to a difficulty of 5.7.

Highlights

  • Technical climb on the South-east face of the Nelion Peak on Mount Kenya to the Batian summit (5,199m)
  • Experience the unique and varied Mount Kenya landscape, including rain-forest, moorland and the iconic Giant Lobelia fields!
  • Excellent acclimatisation profile for high summit success rates.

Itinerary

Important!

Due to the unpredictable weather around the Summit, you should allow for an extra Summit day, which would extend the climb to 8 Days. Kindly be aware that an additional day on the mountain attracts a fee of US$165 pp, which if required can be paid in country.

This is a Class 5 rock route to a maximum difficulty of 5.6. Around 17 pitches are belayed. Descent is by the same route, with a few of the rappels taking more direct lines down cleaner rock. This is a fun route on generally good rock. Rock climbing shoes are required. Approach boots can be left at the base of the route. Though still long, this route is considered to be easier than the North Face Standard Route on Batian.

We had a fantastic time on the mountain and enjoyed every step. Zachary and Chris did an outstanding job and were very professional. We are hopeful that they enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed theirs.
