Santorini might be famous for whitewashed villages, blue domes and ridiculously photogenic sunsets, but there’s another side to the island.
For me, the best way to experience Santorini is to get out and explore it. Walk along the edge of its enormous volcanic caldera, wander through quieter villages and then head onto the water to see those towering cliffs from below.
Santorini hiking isn't particularly technical, either. With a decent pair of shoes, plenty of water and some sensible planning, you can experience one of Greece's most unusual volcanic landscapes on foot.

Hike the Fira to Oia Caldera Trail
The classic Santorini hike is the Fira to Oia trail, which runs for roughly 10.5km along the rim of the caldera.
Starting in Fira, the trail passes through Firostefani and Imerovigli before continuing towards Oia. Along the way, you get almost constant views across the Aegean, with Santorini's volcanic cliffs dropping dramatically towards the sea.
The route isn't technically difficult, but don't underestimate the heat. There's little shade and some sections are rocky or dusty, so I recommend starting early and carrying more water than you think you'll need.

Look Closely at Santorini's Volcanic Landscape
One of the coolest things about hiking Santorini is that you're essentially walking across the remains of an enormous volcanic system.
The cliffs around the caldera expose layers of lava and volcanic deposits left behind by repeated eruptions. The US Geological Survey describes Santorini as a volcanic field, with its modern landscape shaped by several major eruptions and caldera-forming events.
You don't need a geology degree to appreciate it, though. Once you're on the trail, the different colours and layers in the cliffs become surprisingly obvious.
Then See the Caldera From the Sea
After spending a few hours looking down at the caldera, switch perspectives.
From the water, Santorini feels completely different. The villages suddenly look tiny, perched hundreds of metres above the sea, while the volcanic cliffs become the dominant feature of the landscape.
That's why I think walking and sailing work so well together here. The hike gives you the detail; the boat gives you the scale.
Leave Some Time for the Villages
Don't rush straight from Fira to Oia and call it a day.
Villages such as Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio offer quieter lanes, old churches and a glimpse of Santorini away from its busiest viewpoints. They also provide a welcome change of pace after several hours walking along an exposed caldera rim.
In summer, that shady village café may suddenly become the greatest cultural attraction in Greece.
When Is the Best Time for Hiking in Santorini?
Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring Santorini on foot. Temperatures are generally more comfortable and the trails tend to be quieter than during the summer peak.
You can certainly hike in summer, but start early. Midday sunshine and an exposed volcanic trail are a fairly efficient recipe for questioning your life choices.
Santorini isn't a hardcore trekking destination. That's precisely its charm. In just a day or two, you can combine caldera hiking, volcanic scenery, traditional villages and a boat trip across the Aegean.
And that's a much more interesting way to experience the island than simply waiting for sunset with everybody else.
