Best Backpacking Sleeping Bag - Buyer's Guide

What's a good weight for a backpacking sleeping bag?

When backpacking its important that all of your gear is as light as possible to make carrying everything easier. It is generally recommended that your sleeping bag weigh less than 2 lbs (0.9 kg).

Unfortunately, the most lightweight sleeping bags generally come at a higher price because they have down insulation as opposed to synthetic.

Down is lighter and compress easily, but are much more expensive. Hence why all the sleeping bags on this list utilize synthetic filling as they are under $100. Synthetic insulation is a more affordable and practical option for backpacking as down sleeping bags should not get wet or they lose all of their insulation properties.

How do I choose a good backpacking sleeping bag?

Style

Sleeping bags come in two styles - regular and mummy. The regular style sleeping bag has a rectangular shape, which give you room to move around. They are designed for warmer conditions and there also won’t be insulation covering your head. The tend to be fairly heavy. A mummy style sleeping bag is better suited to colder conditions. It fits your body’s shape and has a hood to ensure extra warmth.

Temperature Rating

The temperature rating refers to the coldest condition the sleeping bag can endure while keeping you warm. However, temperature ratings tend to vary from brand to brand and can be fairly unreliable. Use these ratings as a guideline rather than a fact.

Materials

Many sleeping bag shells are made with nylon, polyester and taffeta as they are lightweight and breathable. Ripstop material is also frequently used. While it is not as water-resistant, it doesn't tear as easily so that it is more durable. DryLoft quite a common fabric used in 4-season sleeping bags as it is water-resistant and breathable so that moisture does not get trapped inside the sleeping bag.
